Tanya Parker leads the Colliers International South Australian Valuations team, specialising in data centres.
With over 20 years of experience in commercial property, Tanya is Director of Valuation and Advisory Services within South Australia. In this role Tanya is responsible for conducting valuations of specialised commercial property and assets on a national basis including market, accounting and insurance-based reporting.
Q: How long have you been in the real estate industry and how did you come to join Colliers International?
I’ve been in the real estate industry for 20 years now. I met Ben McCallum (National Director, Valuations and Advisory Services) in 2007 in Vancouver Canada, via my Australian colleague Alex Thamm who put us in contact, as two Aussies working in property in Vancouver. I worked with Ben in Canada and then three years ago back in Australia, Ben once again brought me on and I joined the Adelaide office.
Q: Tell us a bit more about your current role with Colliers. What do you find most fulfilling about it?
I run the South Australia Valuations team, and I’m also the national data centre valuations expert for the business. I like working with our clients and I would consider client relationships are the most fulfilling part of my role, particularly helping my clients with their acquisitions and improving the performance of their asset. I also really enjoy mentoring younger people within the business, sharing my experiences with them and assisting them with building their careers within Colliers.
Q: From your experience of working with private investors, do you have any tips you could share with them when they re-evaluate their real estate strategy in the current environment?
I advise our investor clients to do all that they can to protect their income. This involves retaining tenants wherever possible and working with their facility managers to minimise operational expenses, particularly while buildings aren’t being used to their full capacity.
I also advise them on engaging with their tenants, so that they can understand how their tenants are performing at the moment. Portfolio health checks are also important to understand what assets need more attention.
