Shalain is the head of the Healthcare and Retirement Living asset class across Colliers International Asia Pacific.
Shalain leads the Colliers International’s Healthcare & Retirement Living (HRL) team across Asia Pacific, covering the entire continuum of care from childcare, allied health and medical centres to manufactured housing estates, retirement villages, hospitals and aged care.
Q: How long have you been in the real estate industry and how did you come to join Colliers International?
I’m relatively new to the real estate industry, having only been there for around four and a half years; prior to Colliers I worked as the General Manager at Japara Healthcare. I had worked with Colliers in the past, primarily on a valuations basis.
Q: Tell us a bit more about your current role with Colliers. What do you find most fulfilling about it?
I lead the transactions and valuations business across healthcare and retirement living for Australia and as a secondary piece, increase our market penetration across Asia Pacific. My role also allows me to focus expanding Colliers’ healthcare service suite to a market leading positions, through transactions, product and service diversification. The accountability at Colliers is the most fulfilling part of my role; they will support you as an expert and provide accountability for the way you choose to drive your business within the framework of the business. Support from the company is always there if and when you need it, which is much appreciated and allows you to be successful in your position.
Q: From your experience of working with occupiers, do you have any tips you could share with them when they re-evaluate their real estate strategy in the current environment?
The top three tips I would have to share include:
1. Do your fact checking and validating - don’t get caught up in media hysteria.
2. Look at the current environment as both a risk and an opportunity.
3. Lean on your advisors – this way if you are off track you will avoid losing capital.
