Kansas City, MO – CEO Bryan Johnson will serve as Honorary Chair of Kansas City’s largest fundraising breakfast, the April 9 Light of Hope benefit for Jackson County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). In addition to Johnson’s personal involvement, Colliers International/Kansas City will serve as presenting sponsor of the event, which is expected to draw nearly 1,200 to the Sheraton Crown Center.
Johnson became a strong supporter of Jackson County CASA after attending the 2004 Light of Hope and learning of the nonprofit’s mission. CASA volunteers give a powerful voice to the powerless by advocating for the best interests of children removed from their homes for their safety due to abuse and neglect.
This year, Jackson County CASA volunteers are expected to advocate for 1,265 children as they navigate the family court system. CASA volunteers -- with on-going support of the nonprofit’s staff – work to provide critical information to judges, helping them make the best possible decisions regarding where the children should live and what medical, therapeutic, and educational services they need. Children with a CASA volunteer are far less likely to be re-abused and far more likely to find a safe permanent home.
Jackson County CASA is one of the largest CASA agencies in the country. With 22 programs in Missouri, Jackson County CASA serves one-third of all the children served in the state. For the past eight years, 95 percent of children with a CASA volunteer had not re-entered the Jackson County Court. Every dollar spent on CASA yields $23 in savings in the foster care and family court systems.
More volunteers are always needed. While each case is different, a CASA volunteer usually spends about 10 flexible hours a month meeting with the children, speaking with others involved, and attending meetings or court hearings. There is no need for any special skills or education – just a heart for helping children, a background check, and training.
